It's almost certain that the DSi will sell out the day it is released. There is likely to be a supply shortage of the console. Because of this Nintendo are limiting the number of console that can be purchased at a time, but this will do little to help the supply shortage, that was experienced in Japan. Nintendo DSi Audio Features
A sometimes over looked feature of the black/white DSi is its audio abilities. You can now use the console as your personal stereo. Unfortunately Nintendo opted not to allow the use of MP3 files on the system. They state that AAC files are higher quality but that gives no reason why they would not allow mp3 files. As the system now plays music, they quality of its sound output has been increase. This means your games will also sound better.

With the music software you can do place a variety of effects over your tracks to make some interesting or fun interactions with your music. For example you can play drum sound effects over your tracks or sounds from Mario games such as the jump sound. You can also use a slider as you listen to the tracks to adjust the pitch and speed of the music. I suppose that by connecting two Nintendo DSi consoles to a mixer, you could beat match and perform a DJ set. There are also filters which can change the whole way the track sounds. You can make tracks sound like are being played through a tinny old radio or even better, as if they are coming out of a Nintendo Entertainment System. There is also a karaoke mode which attempts to remove the vocals from any track although it doesn’t always come out sounding great.

A nice addition to this is that you can use the microphone which has always been part of the white DSi to record 10 second clips of your voice. This might sound a bit pointless but it can be fun to add filters to these sound clips. They can make your voice sound like a robot or parrot for example. One of the most interesting filters is harmony where your recording sounds like a group of people saying the same thing. You could even sing and sound like a choir all on your own.

Another interesting feature is of the DSi console white is how the paint job is finished. It no longer has a glossy finish. Now there is a matte finish to the Nintendo DSi console white. This is a nice feature because it means there are less finger prints on the console.

An exciting prospect is the online DSi shop. This will be like the Wii shop channel where you can buy and download new applications and games using the wireless Internet connection. Anything you download will be added to the new menu screen as an icon for you to tap with your stylus.

 

Nintendo White DSi

The first thing you’ll notice when you turn the DSi white on is that there is a new menu for selecting what you want to do. Before you there were a static number of items on each DS, slot 1 cart, slot 2 pictochat or your wifi settings. Now that new applications can be downloaded from the DSi shop the menu needed a way of expanding. Because of this the new menu is on a single scrollable line. To begin with you are given the following options; settings, game, memory card, music, network, camera, pictochat and shop followed by any applications you install.

A neat feature of the white DSi console is that you no longer need to turn the machine off and then on when you want to change games. You can simply take the cart out and return to the menu screen and select the new game.

The bottoms of Nintendo DSi consoles are much clearer than on the DS Lite. Before there was a headphone port, volume control, and Game Boy Advance slot. The new system features just the headphone port in this location giving it a much cleaner appearance. This brings us to the one disadvantage of the new DSi white compared with the DS Lite; the volume control has been repositioned, but the GBA slot has been removed altogether. This is to allow room for all the new features such as the cameras, larger screen and SD card reader but also means the console is no longer backward compatible with GBA cartridges. It should also be mentioned that the Guitar Hero: On Tour grip cannot be used because it required the GBA slot.
