Pink DSi

Unfortunately the Pink DSi isn't available in the UK. A great alternative is the white DSi if you find black too harsh.

One name that has always been synonymous with excellence in the video game world is Nintendo. And once again, Nintendo is proud to release their newest console, the Nintendo DSi, the newest version of the hand held gaming device. The idea of Nintendo DSi console started with the Nintendo Game Boy in the 1990s. It was also a hand held video gaming console. Since then, the console has come a long way, and the Nintendo DSi (Pink and other colours) is yet another example of Nintendo's continued quest for excellence in video gaming.

The Nintendo DSi is similar in design and features to the Nintendo DS, the most recent hand held game console. In fact, the Nintendo DSi console is the third version of the Nintendo DS. Its development began in 2006, and the console was launched in Japan in November 2008.

In one of the early concepts of the Pink DSi, a second DS game slot was added at the request of fans. The second slot, however, required a little extra thickness, so it was eliminated from the final design of the Nintendo DSi.

The Game Boy Advance cartridge slot found in the Nintendo DS was also eliminated. As a result, the Nintendo DSi consoles are not compatible with Game Boy Advance games, and additions such as the Nintendo DS RumblePak and the grip needed to play Guitar Hero: On Tour and Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades cannot be used with the Nintendo DSi.

One of the biggest changes made between the Nintendo DS Lite and the Pink DSi is the incorporation of cameras and a hidden SD card slot. The SD card can be used to store pictures taken with the Nintendo DSi, and store applications downloaded from the DSi Shop. It can also be used to play AAC audio, though the console does not support MP3s.

The DSi Shop is similar to the Wii Shop Channel. It uses Nintendo Points to "buy" applications and games. Applications are worth 200, 500, or 800 points (applications worth 800 points are listed as "Premium"). Any pink Nintendo DSi that accesses the DSi Shop is given 1,000 Nintendo Points to use.

The DSi is about 12% thinner than the Nintendo DS Lite. Its screens are bigger, and it has better speakers. The power switch has been replaced by a power button, which can also be used in software to return to the main menu and switch games without needing to restart the Nintendo DSi.

The Nintendo DSi console was released in Japan in November 2008, available in matte black and matte white. Since its launch, more than one million units have been sold.

The hand held game console hits Australia, Europe, and the United States in early April 2009. In Australia and Europe, the console will be available in matte black and matte white. In the United States, it will be available in matte black and matte blue. The green, blue and pink DSi have since become available in Japan.
