The Uses of M3 DS Real

On this page I’m going to go on about the M3 DS Real which is a piece of hardware for the Nintendo DS really but they might be making a version for the Nintendo DSi console although I’m not sure that they will work with them when they are released in this country. By the way, if the DSi is already out when you’re reading this, you’re better off getting one of them. If you want a cheap upgrade to a DS Lite, you might want to consider the M3 Simply or Real version.

What the M3DS really is, is a little device which you can plug into your portable games console to let you play backups of games such as GTA: Chinatown Wars or any other DS game for that matter you already own. If you don’t own any games then don’t worry, you can use it to play games which are developed independently and distributed freely over the Internet. It’s a great way to build up your games collection without spending any money (apart from a small amount for the M3 DS Real in the first place. So what the M3 DS Real does that is like the Nintendo DSi console is that it can read and write to and from an SD card. This opens up a world of opportunities for the games console. Unfortunately the DSi’s implementation of this is full of restrictions which massively reduce the use of the feature for some advanced users. For example on the new console, although you can play GTA Chinatown Wars and any game you like, you cannot play mp3 files although it’s simple to do it with an M3DS.

By far the best part of the M3DS Real however is that you can use homebrew applications on it which are blocked by the black DSi console. There is really no need for this apart from Nintendo want complete control over what software is available for their machines. This means that Nintendo prevent software being used on their machines which would never happen on a PC and is part of the brilliance of the Person Computer in the Internet age. We no longer rely on large corporations to provide us with made-for-profit software, we can just download a large proportion of it. In fact there are high quality versions of just about any mainstream software available free from the Internet and they are growing in popularity all the time. These range from office suites to operating systems and web browsers.

As the M3 DS Real is not made by Nintendo it does not block any of the applications which is great news for expanding the uses of the DS. It means that ideas can be produced into actual real things without the risk of thousands of pounds needing to be invested.

Some examples of the types of application which have been made for use with the device and the console let you use MSN messenger, yahoo messenger, word processing, skype and lots of other programs that you might only find on a PC normally. Now you can do all these things on a portable £100 games console.

The Skype application alone is pretty amazing and can pay for the M3 Real Rumble pack on its own. It might not be as fun as GTA Chinatown Wars but it’s more impressive in that it turns your games console into a mobile phone. It does require a Wi-Fi connection to work but to make up for that is making free phone calls! So it’s a mobile phone which makes free phone calls for the cost of less than a single game, plus the fact that, that is just one of dozens of interesting ways you can use the M3DS.

The Nintendo DSi console and the M3 DS Real

Now something the DSi can do which the device we’re talking about cannot do. The first and most obvious is that you cannot take photographs with it. In fact the Nintendo DSi console has two cameras so you can take photos and then edit them with the built in software. The software is designed to be fun as the cameras won’t be used much for serious photography as the quality of the cameras is very low in comparison with what most modern cameras phone let alone stand alone cameras.

The Nintendo console also makes more use of the microphone than it did before in previous editions. You can record a sound click of yourself speaking and mess around with it to produce amusing effects. Examples of the effects are that you can speed up your voice, or change the pitch of it. You can make yourself sound like a robot, a parrot or even a choir.

Also fun is that you can make your audio files sound different. For example you can play back some of your favourite songs but make them sound as though they have been played on a NES with its very limited sound capabilities. It’s great fun. There’s also a karaoke mode which attempts to remove vocals from a track so you can sing in their place.

As you have read, the M3 DS Real offers so many fantastic features that it is one of the best value buys you can get for any owner of a DS. If you don’t own a DS or are looking for an upgrade, the DSi console with wealth of new features can’t be ignored. From the obvious features like the new cameras to the more subtle improvements such as the larger screens and better button positioning, you really must at the very least try one. If you don’t like it you can always return it within 7 days.
