Important Black DSi News
The DSi is almost certainly going to sell out (if it hasn't already). For this reason Nintendo have asked stores to limit the number of consoles they will sell to an individual household. This may help reduce demand but it is still likely that the DSI will be hard to get hold of this year as the Wii was when first released. To avoid disapointment, beat the rush and Order Now.
At first glance Nintendo DSi consoles are similar in appearance to the DS Lite however there have been numerous improvements to the design cosmetically as well as to the software. It is available in two colours, on this page we will talk about the black DSi although in every way other than the colour it is exactly the same as the white DSi.
Firstly the casing no longer has the same shiny effect that the previous version of the console had. Instead is it given a grittier matte finish. This somehow gives the device a classier, less cheap seeming appearance. The system itself is lighter and thinner now. In total it is 12% lighter but to accommodate for the larger screen and new features the black DSi is slightly longer.
The L and R buttons now stick out a little bit which makes them slightly easier to press. Along with them on the top of Nintendo DSi consoles is the new power adaptor port. This is now a different shape from previous models which means the adaptor cannot be used interchangeably. We can’t understand why the decision was made to change the design in this way and it can be slightly annoying if for example you want to recharge an old DS but you only have a new power adaptor handy.

Black DSi ConsolesThe D-pad now rests a little lower into the casing meaning you don’t need to press quite as hard although it doesn’t really make much difference. On the right hand side you will find the new SD card slot which can be used for storing your music, photos and software downloaded from the shop. The console has internal memory of 256KB which can be used until it is full when you will need to either delete files or use an SD card. The power button has been moved on the black DSi just next to the touch screen. It is well positioned so you are unlikely to touch it by mistake and if you do it is quite stiff anyway so you won’t push it accidentally. If you press it in it will bring up the system menu, if you hold it in it will turn off the console.
The feature most people are talking about on Nintendo DSi black is the cameras it comes with. These are two low resolution cameras that act as a new way to enjoy the console and interact with it. Both cameras have VGA resolution (640x400). The external camera is placed on the top half oc the casing in the corner. The internal camera points towards the user and is located on the hinge between the upper and lower sections of the system.
It is expected that over the next 12 months we will start to see more games which incorporate the cameras as an element of gameplay. Cameras have been used for playing games already on the PS2 and are beginning to be used on the Xbox 360. Now they will be used for the first time on a handheld system. This isn’t the first time cameras have been used on a handheld as there was a very low quality black and white camera with a printer released for the original Game Boy. This is however the first time that the camera can be used to interact with games on the black DSi.
The DSi consoles black is not longer glossy, it is now given a matte finish. This makes the Nintendo DSi console black less annoying since they don't get finger prints like they used to.
Although the cameras are not of a great quality as far as resolution or lens quality are concerned, (although when you consider to price of Nintendo DSi Consoles compared with mobile camera phones, they are great value) they are designed to offer the user a lot of fun options. Photos can be drawn on, or have speech bubbles and hearts placed in them. You can even use some recent face tracking techniques that you would expect in the latest high end compact cameras and even that technology is taken further on the DSi black by enabling you to drawn on a live image video feed and for the artwork to follow the movement of the feed. Most commonly this will be used to draw big ears or rude things on people and the marked lines will stay in the correct place on the image even when the subject moves around.
