Where to buy your DSi ConsoleAs the the console is certain to sell out, there is very little price competition between stores. As someone who works on lots of price comparison websites, I almost always use Amazon for games consoles. Here's why:
1. Amazon are almost always cheapest.
2. Amazon offer free delivery and deliver on the release date (or occasionally before the release date).
3. HMV are cheap but I have have had bad experiences with them. They took thousands of preorders for the Wii which they could not honour. Instead of simply stating that they were out of stock, they kept their customers waiting months for the consoles to be sent out.
It’s predicted that Nintendo DSi consoles will be the best selling of all games consoles in 2009. The DS is currently the best selling console on the market, even outselling all three 7th generation home consoles.
In Japan the white and black DSi combined sold over 170,000 units in the first 48 hours on the market. It is estimated that sales could have been even higher but the system had sold out in many stores before lunch time in many stores.
After the just one month the combined sales of the black and white DSi reached over half a million. It still has a long way to go to meet the 24.2 million units of DS sold in Japan but it has certainly brought life back into the sales of the system.
Get Your Nintendo DSi TodayThe console has surpassed expectations in Japan for sales and has really brought new life into the DS. It sold out on its release as it is expected to in the UK. Such is the demand in Japan that additional units have been allocated to the market. It has been feared that this will mean fewer units will be available in Europe which makes a shortage over here even more likely.
The Nintendo DSi release date is much sooner than expected by some. The time between announcing the released date and that actual date is less than two months. This is great news though because the consle has already been available in Japan for several months. Now UK gamers have a chance to get their hands on the Nintendo DSi Consle.
The other related announcement Nintendo made was to give a Nintendo DSi price. The price will be set at £150. This is £50 more than the current DS Lite but for all the new features it certainly seems more than worth the extra cost. For your extra £50 you will get a slimmer, light and frankly, cooler design. More importantly are those two cameras which are likely to add so much to many games on the system. Along with that the DSIshop is going to be really interesting to see how that develops. If you’re like me and download a lot of games for the Xbox, Wii or PS3 you’ll now get the chance to do that with your portable console. There’s also been to promise of free downloads from Nintendo.
Another device that has brought more life to the console is the M3 DS Real which has caused quite a stir in Japan. You can read more about the M3 at the bottom of this page.
Black DSiAs with previous consoles in the series, the latest edition will at first be available in two colours, a white and a black DSi. It is expected that more colours will be released over time as has been with the original DS and the DS Lite. The most popular colour before was the pink edition so when there is a pink DSi it is expect to sell well but for the time being, pink fans will probably opt for the white console. There is no difference between the two of them so on this site we use the terms white and black DSi interchangeably.
Nintendo DSi Consoles were officially revealed in October, just one month before its Japanese release. It is the third version of the console to be released after the original DS and the DS Lite. The latest version features main new features which I’ll briefly run down now then go into a little more detail. The main feature is the two cameras but there are other exciting additions to the system. There is now a web browsers built in (so you don’t need to download Opera for it). You can use it as a portable music player (not mp3 though sadly, only ACC files – like iTunes). It can use SD cards which can be used for storing photos, music and other files. Finally larger and brighter screens are included while the size has been reduced by 12%.

The first upgrade of the original DS was mostly a cosmetic one. It was much needed and changed the appearance of the made the console seem less like a child’s toy and more of a gaming machine that anyone could enjoy. It included a few functional upgrades too such as the increased screen brightness but mostly focused on appearance.
Nintendo DSi consoles on the other hand required less of a cosmetic improvement, although it has a few nice new touches but mostly focuses on new ways you can use the system.
White DSiOf course their is no difference between the White DSi and the black one but many people prefer a specific colour so we have set up a section for each. The white DSi is one of the first two colours available and is expected to be one of the best selling even when new colours join the range.
We’ll start with the most obvious improvement. The white and the black DSi now sport a lovely new digital camera. Nintendo didn’t think that was enough so they put in two cameras just in case. The first camera sits on the outside lid of the casing. The second on is positioned inside the casing pointing towards the player. Neither of these cameras is going to stun you with the quality of the images they produce as they are only recorded with a VGA sensor which is the same quality you’d expect the first generation of camera phone. Despite this the images appear better on the white DSi than they would on most phones because of the quality and size of the screens.
The cameras however are mostly designed for fun. The built in camera software adds lots of ways you can enjoy you photos. The image editing isn’t quite going to rival Photoshop but it does offer lots of easy to use features, some of which will entertain you for 30 seconds but for some younger people I can see those spending hours playing around with their photos.
The most basic ability of the editing applications on Nintendo DSi consoles is that you can draw on the pictures using your stylus and insert premade images such as love hearts, speech bubbles and stars. You can also place a variety of filters over your photos to give it a grainy effect or some other more interesting filters.
M3 DS RealPerhaps the most essential purchase for any owner of the DS is the M3 DS Real. If you own a DSi console it’s also worth checking out if they have made one which is compatible with it. It opens up so many new possibilities for the console. The reason for the brilliance of the little device is that it allows you to run applications which normally you would not be able to on the hardware. Most of the applications designed for use with it are entirely free for download and play on you portable games system.
An example of an application on which you can use with the M3 DS Real is the chat clients which mean you can communicate with your friends and family over the Internet using your MSN, Yahoo or Aim buddy list through your DS or DSi console. There’s lots more information about the M3DS on the page, just click the link above to get to it and read it out loud if you feel the need.
Green, Blue and Pink DSiPeople always like something that sets them apart from others. This can be evident in fashion and other things that would differentiate them from others. The new Nintendo DSi console has also other colours that could match your tastes.
Having a different coloured handheld console can sometimes be a fashion statement to others. The introduction of different coloured units is not limited to Nintendo’s camp but also with Sony’s as their PSP are also introduced with additional colours to make them stand out with others.
The Green, Blue and Pink DSi have not been confirmed for any other countries not are not likely to appear on the market for some time. Personally I would still pick a Black DSi.
An unusual feature in the world wide release of the DSi console is that it was available at the initial release in the same two colours everywhere except for America. For some reason they decided that the console should be made in white and black for the Japanese and Europe and rest of the world’s market expect for the American one. In America they still had the black version but instead of a white console they had the blue DSi.
Some months later the blue DSi was released in Japan along with the pink and green versions. It is expected that at some point the Nintendo DSi blue will be on sale in the UK too but until then you would be better off just buying one of the colours already available instead of waiting for months on end just to get the console in a different colour. When the blue DSi is released you will be able to see all the UK’s best prices on our price comparison page. Again the release date for this system is unknown in the UK and it has not even been confirmed outside the US and Japan so go and buy a white or black one now instead of waiting years for a different colour.
Pink Nintendo DSi ConsoleUnfortunately there will not be a pink DSi. The DS had a version in that colour which was popular but Nintendo have decided not to release a Pink DSi at this point. There probably will be one in the future but it could be a long time away. Because of this is does not seem worth waiting for one. A better idea is to get a white Nintendo DSi if you are not so keen on a black one.
